Just to be clear:
We can talk at parties; we can nod hello at the store. But if I know that you oppose the legal partnership of any loving couple, how can we be friends?
If I know that while you support my right to have as many children as I want and support my daughter’s right to go get birth control and support the government’s right to chase down my babydaddy for child support, but you do not support my right to choose whether or not to carry my own pregnancy to term, how can we be friends? Note: being opposed to the act of abortion is not the same as being opposed to a WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE, people. For fuck’s sake stop voting based on your own personal gross out threshold.
If I know that while you have no problem buying food from, using the labor of, and getting your nails done by African Americans, yet you would not allow your offspring to date or marry one- how can we be friends?
I really want to know. How do people do it? I get that I disagree with people. Gun laws, imminent domain. Capitalism, labor. But I’m just not able to disagree about basic fucking human rights and still put on a happy face. My theory? When people say, “I don’t like to talk about it because it’s not worth debating” it means they are ashamed of their backwards politics. At least have some balls and let the whole world see what an ass you are. Limbaugh and Coulter do it all day, every day.
Edited to add: Okay when I say backwards politics I’m referring to bigotry, not the abortion debate which is clear to me as an athiest but I respect that this issue is very muddy for those of you who believe you have a duty to protect the unborn child. I don’t see how reproductive rights are up for debate, but I can see more of the nuance in the arguments from the fundamental side.
It’s just that simple.
Remember when I said I’m not judgmental? I lied.
