Last month when the restaurant I worked at hosted Business After Hours (An Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce Event!) I was one of the lucky few who was picked to work the party as a server. I think that was the evening that sealed the deal for me, and made me remember that I’m not a waitress anymore and that I do, in fact, have a marketable business which can sustain me while I finish up Doula training. I was just being lazy. Waiting tables is easy, and people pay you even when you’re not giving them you’re a game. Selling websites is…well, selling. It’s calling people, and returning phone calls, and driving to meetings, and giving bids with a straight face. It’s making the time to sit down and create, and sometimes that means working at 3 a.m.
Plus! Here I was, working this party in my black uniform, picking up used plates and lipstick covered napkins, trying to shake a hand or two when one of my clients would introduce me to a potential client who must be thinking, well how good can she be? And that night I realized I don’t have to be doing this. I can suck it up. I can sell a website here and there. I can go back to working in my underwear.
So today I did it. I held two meetings, hair freshly blown out, makeup artfully understated, sales pitch honed and simple. You need this. Every business needs this. I will walk you through this process. You can trust me. And now I have work for the next month or more. Who knew? Oh, right. I did. It just takes a good day every once in a while to make me remember. Well, one good day plus several weeks of dwindling funds in the bank account.
