At 33, I have settled into my role as domestic provider, goddess if you will. At least I thought I had. I’ve become adept at scrambling eggs while unloading the dishwasher and cueing up Baby Einstein. I do laundry every Monday without ruining very much. I have a Biz bucket. For the most part I think I do OK.
Usually I clean the tile floor with a towel and some spray cleaner, because there’s not much of the floor and mopping is a pain in the ass. But today I hauled out the Bug Guns, the Hoover Floor Mate machine we got as a wedding gift. I’m a fan of gadgets, Internet. I love machinery; nothing turns me on like a good power tool. So when I found out there was a power tool designed to squeegie dirt and funk and maybe even germs off my bathroom floor, I had to have it. Since I’ve been kind of a domestic slacker lately, I haven’t had occasion to pull it out until today when I accidentaly dumped dirt all over the freshly wiped bathroom floor. That’s when I realized-the floor mate? You’re supposed to clean IT after you use it to clean your floors, people!
When I realized there was no suction, I investigated. I should have photographed what I found, but honestly, I’m not sure I ever want to see it again. Let’s just say that 30 minutes later, there was a pile of- I’m not sure what- which had previously been cemented into the nozzle of the Big Gun, sitting on the bathroom floor wating to be sucked up by the shop vac. (God, I love the shop vac. She never fails me) I noticed during this whole endeavor that there are actual release buttons for the nozzle and brushes. That was my first clue that this is actually routine maintenance and not major overhaul: no screws to get the access I needed.
All this time I thought I was getting ahead-learning the right way to stack a dishwasher-rocking the shop vac as vac AND leaf blower. Raking leaves with a vengeance!
I suppose I should check the owner’s manual of the broken Shark Vacuum cleaner, just in case there’s a bag or a filter or a hose I should have beel cleaning all along, or something.

I have been intrigued by the Floor Mate, but now I think I’ll just continue using our shop vac for this stuff. Do you have any experience with carpet cleaning machines you’d care to share?
